CMU received 14 awards in MAB's 2007 competition, including five first-place finishes in various radio and television categories.
Central Michigan University has again made a stellar showing in the Michigan Association of Broadcasters College Broadcast Awards, bringing home more than a dozen honors in the annual contest.
CMU received 14 awards in MAB's 2007 competition, including five first-place finishes in various radio and television categories.
Winners in the audio categories included:
- Decker senior Jordan Glaza, who took first place in the Air Check competition. Novi junior Kelly McMann received an honorable mention in this category as well.
- December 2006 graduate Adam Barragato of Farmington Hills, whose sports update took second place for Daily Sportscast/Newscast/News Feature.
- "Geekspeak" co-hosts Bryan Carr of Alpena, Frank Wisswell of Hazel Park and Lindsey Wahowiak of Wyandotte, all CMU seniors, who earned an honorable mention in the Talk Show category.
- McMann, whose public service announcement about driving in construction zones took second place in the Public Service Announcement category.
- Barragato and McMann, who earned an honorable mention in the Promotional Announcement category for their promotion of WMHW-FM's Central-Western Tailgate.
- Waterford junior Cody Landry, Madison Heights senior Anthony Marzilli, sophomores Arynn Titus of Waterford and Matt Collins of Greenville, and Barragato and McMann, whose public service announcement about the common cold earned an honorable mention in the Large Group category.
- December graduates Kevin Abdelkader of Muskegon and Ronnie Love of Bay City, who took first place in Daily Newscast/Sportscast for the Oct. 6, 2006, episode of "News Central 34," while Manchester junior Christina Vecchioni and Warren senior Jennifer Deneau earned an honorable mention for the Nov. 8, 2006, episode of the same show.
- "Central View," which took first place in the Talk Show category. Graduate students Ken Ochalek of Romeo and Aaron Jones of Pinconning were recognized for their contributions to the program.
- West Bloomfield junior Jason Dizik, sophomore Mike Germond of Grand Rapids and December 2006 graduate Brian Sterling of Troy, who took first place for their sports play-by-play of a CMU volleyball game against Ball State University.
- A sweep of the large group category, with sketches from "A-OK Sketch Comedy." In first place were seniors Mike Greiner of Grosse Pointe Woods and Jordan Anderson of Williamsburg, graduate student Tom Kauffman of Muskegon, and May 2006 graduates Dave Seger of St. Clair Shores and Kevin Wilson of Flushing with the sketch "Jam Session." In second place were Farmington junior Matt Hays, December 2006 graduate A.J. Miller of Shelby, and Kauffman and Seger for "These Are the Days." Ochalek, Wilson, Greiner and May 2006 graduate Delbert Shoopman of Athens took an honorable mention for the sketch "Bless'd."
Moore Hall Television and WMHW-FM are in the running for the Station of the Year distinctions in television and radio, respectively, which will be announced at the March 14 MAB conference in Lansing.
